Established after the civil war,
Princeville is the first town incorporated
by African Americans in the United States.
Located on a bend of the Tar River,
Princeville has flooded nine times since
1800. Hurricane Floyd in 1990 broke the
town’s levees and caused water to rise 23
feet above Princeville’s streets. While
some residents have moved away due to
repeated flooding, many remain and are
working to make the town more
environmentally and economically
resilient. NCGrowth is working with
Princeville this semester to conduct a
market analysis, incentives research, and
create marketing materials for an up and
coming 53-acre commercial district in
Princeville.
